Group Safari FAQs
From choosing the best travel style for your group to understanding logistics, accommodations, and what it’s like to be on safari, we’ve got the answers. Whether you're traveling with family, friends, or a group of like-minded adventurers, our expert tips will help you plan a seamless, enriching, and unforgettable journey for everyone.
How many people do I need for a private group safari?
A group of 10 guests or more constitutes a group.
How can we arrange a custom group adventure through African Travel?
There are multiple ways to organize a custom group safari with us. The easiest option is to take over one of our scheduled group departures—either an Escorted Safari, where the cost of a group escort is built into the price, or a Locally Hosted Small Group Journey. Both options offer seamless planning, secured room allocations, and favorable booking terms. For a fully tailored experience, we can design a custom itinerary that aligns with your group’s travel style and interests.
Can I choose the dates for my group safari?
If you take over a scheduled departure, the travel dates are fixed. However, for fully custom groups, we can arrange an itinerary around your preferred dates, subject to availability. Simply let us know your ideal timeframe, and we’ll tailor the itinerary accordingly.
How much flexibility do we have in customizing the itinerary?
You have complete flexibility with fully customized itineraries—from destinations and accommodations to activities. If you take over a scheduled departure, the dates and accommodations are set, but we can adjust activities to suit your group’s interests. Additional pre- and post-safari extensions can also be arranged.

Can we choose the type of accommodation for our group?
We offer a range of accommodations, including luxury lodges, safari camps, and exclusive hotels. Our set departures use some of the most sought-after lodges and camps in prime locations, such as Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge in the world-famous Sabi Sands Game Reserve. For custom groups, we curate options based on your preferences and budget.
What size can our group be?
Group safaris start with 10 travelers. When taking over one of our set departures, room allocations are larger, ranging from 12 to 20 guests, depending on the itinerary. Larger groups can be accommodated based on a custom basis. No group is too large.
What is the best time for a group safari?
Most safari destinations in Africa are great year-round. June to October is the high season, while traveling during the shoulder season offers fewer crowds and great value.
What is the best destination for a group safari?
The best destination for your group safari depends on your group's interests and the experience you're looking for. South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania are top choices, offering incredible wildlife, luxurious accommodations, and a range of safari experiences. However, we offer experiences across 14 African destinations and can accommodate various group requests.
What activities can we do as a group?
Groups can enjoy a variety of activities, including game drives, walking safaris, boat trips (in certain destinations), cultural experiences, and more. Activities can be tailored to suit your group’s interests, whether focused on wildlife, photography, food and wine, history, or cultural immersion. For multi-generational families, we ensure that activities accommodate all ages.

Can we organize special events during our safari, such as a celebration or private dinner?
Absolutely! We can arrange private dinners, celebrations, and unique experiences like bush banquets and sundowner cocktails. Let us know your vision, and we’ll make it happen.
What if not all members of our group want to do the same activities?
We offer flexibility by providing alternative activities for those who prefer different experiences. We can also arrange smaller, specialized excursions within the group.
Can we have a dedicated guide for our group?
Your group will have a dedicated local guide in each destination. In Southern Africa, guides are typically based at each location and do not travel between destinations with the group. However, in East Africa, when traveling between destinations by road, the same guide usually accompanies the group throughout the journey.
Will we have an escort accompanying the group?
This is up to you. Groups often prefer to have their own escort or group leader. If you take over one of our Escorted Safari departures, the cost of an escort is already included. We can also arrange a dedicated tour manager to accompany the group if desired.
Are meals included in the group safari package?
Most meals are included in our group itineraries, including specialty dining experiences such as GOLD Restaurant in Cape Town. We can also arrange meals to match specific culinary preferences. On safari, all meals, and in many cases, beverages are included.

How do I book a custom group safari?
Booking starts with a consultation to discuss your vision for the trip. Once we understand your preferences, we will present the best options for your group. After approval, a deposit secures your booking, and we take care of the rest.
Is there a deposit required to secure a custom group safari?
Yes, a non-refundable deposit of USD $1,000 per group is required to secure your safari. This deposit is applied toward the final payment.
Can we make changes to our custom safari itinerary after booking?
We strive to accommodate changes, but modifications after booking are subject to availability and may incur additional costs.
How far in advance should we book a custom group safari?
We recommend booking at least 12 months in advance to secure the best accommodations, guides, and safari dates—especially during peak seasons. If you take over one of our scheduled departures, the timeline can be shorter since room allocations are already secured.
Will our group be the only ones in the safari vehicle?
For private group safaris, the safari vehicle is exclusively for your group.

Can we incorporate conservation activities into our safari?
Yes! We can integrate MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® experiences, including wildlife tracking, community visits, and conservation efforts.
What happens if a member of the group has special needs or dietary requirements?
We accommodate all guests’ needs, including mobility assistance, food allergies, and dietary preferences. We work closely with lodges and camps to ensure every traveler is well cared for.
Is there Wi-Fi on safari?
Yes, most luxury lodges and camps offer Wi-Fi in common areas, and some also provide access in the rooms.
