Why Zambia & Victoria Falls
Zambia is one of Africa’s last great wilderness frontiers, celebrated for its walking safaris, intimate lodges, and abundant wildlife. Here, safari is at its most authentic —raw, untamed, and deeply immersive.
A Zambia safari takes travelers into the heart of the wild. Explore South Luangwa National Park, famed for its exceptional walking safaris and predator sightings. Canoe along the Zambezi River in Lower Zambezi National Park, where elephants and hippos share the water. Conclude your journey at the breathtaking Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya—“The Smoke That Thunders.”

Zambia Safari Frequently Asked Questions
Zambia is known for its untouched wilderness, authentic camps, and adventurous spirit. Often considered a hidden gem, it offers some of Africa’s most immersive safari experiences in remote, unspoiled settings.
The peak safari season is June–October, when it’s dry and wildlife is concentrated around water. The green season (November–April) brings lush scenery and great birding, though some remote areas may close due to rains.
South Luangwa is famous for leopards, lions, elephants, hippos, and strong wild dog sightings. The Lower Zambezi offers superb water-based viewing with elephants, buffalo, hippos, and predators along the riverbanks. Kafue adds cheetah, large antelope species, and vast, open plains.
There are no direct flights from North America. Most travelers connect via Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, or Doha. Within Zambia, guests travel between parks on scheduled bush flights.
A classic Zambia safari lasts about 10 days, typically combining South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, and Victoria Falls for diverse wildlife and landscapes.
Guests can explore the Falls via scenic walkways, take Zambezi sunset cruises, enjoy microlight or helicopter flights, visit local markets, and try adventure activities like bungee jumping, ziplining, and white-water rafting. During low water, canoeing and Devil’s Pool swims are also available.
High water (Feb–May) offers maximum flow and dramatic views, with excellent white-water rafting, though heavy spray can limit visibility. Low water (Sep–Dec) reveals rock formations, provides clearer views, and allows adventure activities like Devil’s Pool swims and canoeing.
Zambia pairs naturally with South Africa and Botswana, often as a Victoria Falls add-on. Some travelers also combine it with Zimbabwe, especially those who want to experience Victoria Falls from both sides.
June–August is cooler and dry. September–October is hot and dry (often 90–100°F). The green season brings humidity, afternoon showers, and lush vegetation.
Zambia is best suited to travelers who want a highly immersive, nature-focused experience. First-timers often visit Victoria Falls, but full Zambia safaris are more frequently chosen by seasoned safari travelers who enjoy walking safaris, remote camps, and fewer crowds.
A typical journey includes 3–4 nights in South Luangwa for walking and game drives, 3–4 nights in the Lower Zambezi for boat, canoe, and fishing activities, and a 2–3-night stay in Livingstone for Victoria Falls.
U.S. citizens can obtain an e-visa in advance or a visa on arrival at major airports, including Lusaka and Livingstone.
